The Danube and Black Sea Bulgaria Self-Drive

D1: Sofia / Arrival
Arrival at Sofia International Airport. Pick up your rental car and drive to your hotel. Depending on arrival time, enjoy a first walk in Bulgaria’s capital.

D2: Sofia
A full day to explore Sofia at your own pace: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Saint Sofia Church, the ancient Serdica remains, Vitosha Boulevard, museums, cafés and restaurants.

D3: Sofia – Belogradchik – Vidin
Drive northwest towards Belogradchik, famous for its spectacular red rock formations and historic fortress. Continue to Vidin, a Danube town known for Baba Vida Fortress and its riverside atmosphere.

D4: Vidin – Ruse
Travel east along the Danube route towards Ruse, often called Bulgaria’s “Little Vienna” for its elegant architecture. Enjoy a walk through the city centre or along the Danube promenade.

D5: Ruse – Veliko Tarnovo
Leave the Danube region and drive towards Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria’s medieval capital. Explore the impressive Tsarevets Fortress, the old streets and the panoramic views over the Yantra River.

D6: Veliko Tarnovo – Plovdiv
Drive south towards Plovdiv, one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Upon arrival, discover its Roman heritage, colourful Old Town and lively Kapana creative district.

D7: Plovdiv
A full day to enjoy Plovdiv at leisure. Visit the Roman Theatre, the Ancient Stadium, the Old Town’s Revival-period houses, galleries, cafés and the creative Kapana district.

D8: Plovdiv – Nessebar – Varna
Drive east towards the Black Sea coast with a stop in Nessebar, an ancient UNESCO-listed town famous for its churches, cobbled streets and maritime charm. Continue to Varna, Bulgaria’s maritime capital.

D9: Varna / Departure
Return the rental car and depart from Varna Airport.
