The Varna Bulgaria Loop: Coast, Capitals and Culture

A scenic self-drive loop starting and ending in Varna, Bulgaria’s maritime capital. This itinerary combines the Black Sea coast, medieval heritage, Sofia, Rila Monastery, mountain towns and Plovdiv, offering a compact but rich overview of Bulgaria’s cultural highlights.

 

D1: Varna / Arrival
Arrival at Varna Airport. Pick up your rental car and drive to your hotel. Depending on arrival time, enjoy a first walk in Varna, along the Sea Garden or by the waterfront.

 

D2: Varna – Arbanassi – Veliko Tarnovo
Drive inland towards Arbanassi, a charming historic village known for its traditional houses and richly decorated churches. Continue to Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria’s medieval capital, beautifully set above the Yantra River.

 

D3: Veliko Tarnovo – Sofia
Depart for Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital. Upon arrival, enjoy free time for a first discovery of the city centre, with its churches, Roman remains, elegant boulevards and lively atmosphere.

 

D4: Sofia
A full day to explore Sofia at your own pace: Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Saint Sofia Church, the ancient Serdica remains, Vitosha Boulevard and the city’s museums, cafés and restaurants.

 

D5: Sofia – Rila Monastery – Bansko
Drive towards the Rila Mountains and visit the UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery, Bulgaria’s most iconic spiritual landmark. Continue to Bansko, a charming mountain town at the foot of the Pirin Mountains.

 

D6: Bansko – Plovdiv
Travel from the Pirin region to Plovdiv, one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities. Explore its Roman Theatre, colourful Old Town and creative Kapana district.

 

D7: Plovdiv – Burgas – Varna
Drive east towards the Black Sea coast with a stop in Burgas, a relaxed seaside city known for its Sea Garden and coastal atmosphere. Continue north to Varna for your final overnight stay.

 

D8: Varna / Departure
Return the rental car and depart from Varna Airport.
