A rewarding self-drive journey through Bulgaria’s mountains, monasteries, heritage towns and mineral spa regions. This itinerary combines cultural discovery with relaxing wellness stays in destinations known for their natural mineral waters, from Sapareva Banya to Bansko and Devin.

D1: Sofia / Arrival
Arrival at Sofia International Airport. Pick up your rental car and drive to your hotel. Depending on arrival time, enjoy a first walk in Bulgaria’s capital.

 

D2: Sofia – Seven Rila Lakes – Sapareva Banya
Drive towards the Rila Mountains and discover the spectacular Seven Rila Lakes area, one of Bulgaria’s most beautiful natural landscapes. Continue to Sapareva Banya, famous for its hot mineral springs and spa hotels.

 

D3: Sapareva Banya – Rila Monastery – Bansko
Travel to the UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery, Bulgaria’s most iconic spiritual and architectural landmark. Continue through scenic mountain roads to Bansko, a charming town at the foot of the Pirin Mountains.

 

D4: Bansko – Melnik – Rozhen Monastery – Bansko
Enjoy a full-day excursion to Melnik, Bulgaria’s smallest town, known for its wine traditions, sandstone pyramids and historic houses. Visit the peaceful Rozhen Monastery before returning to Bansko.

 

D5: Bansko – Devin
Drive into the Rhodope Mountains, a region of forests, legends, traditional villages and clean mountain air. Arrival in Devin, one of Bulgaria’s best-known spa and wellness destinations.

 

D6: Devin – Shiroka Laka – Plovdiv
Continue through the Rhodopes with a stop in Shiroka Laka, an atmospheric village known for its traditional architecture and folklore heritage. Drive onward to Plovdiv, one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities.

 

D7: Plovdiv
A full day to explore Plovdiv at your own pace: the Roman Theatre, the Old Town with its colourful Revival-period houses, the Ancient Stadium and the creative Kapana district.

 

D8: Plovdiv – Kazanlak – Tryavna
Drive through the Rose Valley to Kazanlak, known for its Thracian heritage and rose traditions. Continue to Tryavna, a beautifully preserved National Revival town famous for woodcarving, crafts and traditional architecture.

 

D9: Tryavna – Veliko Tarnovo
Departure for Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria’s medieval capital. Explore the dramatic Tsarevets Fortress, the old streets and the panoramic views over the Yantra River.

 

D10: Veliko Tarnovo – Sofia
Drive back to Sofia. Depending on timing, enjoy free time for shopping, museums, restaurants or a final evening in the capital.

 

D11: Sofia / Departure
Return the rental car and departure from Sofia International Airport.
