Program
Survakari masquerade is an old ritual performed at the beginning of the year in Bulgarian villages to chase away the bad spirits.
Men, women and children in frightening masks and costumes, called survakari, light fire, dance and sing ritual songs for health, long life and prosperity. Households await their arrival with a ritual meal and gifts, which are later distributed to orphans and people in need.
This ritual, almost forgotten by the younger generations, has been restored and listed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It is better known as the Surva Festival and can be witnessed between 23th and 25th January 2026.
